Our story began in 1970 when Sveinn Sigurbjarnarson started operating a snowcat and buses for transportation. In 1974, Sveinn acquired a snowcat, which was used to transport people across the mountains between Eskifjörður and Norðfjörður. This snowcat, named Tanni, also played a key role in expeditions with scientists into Iceland's glaciers. The name Tanni was later adopted for our company.
Over the years, both our fleet and the variety of tours we offered grew. In 1984, we expanded beyond Iceland, offering trips to Europe. Our first international destination was the Faroe Islands, and since then, we have taken groups to numerous other countries. In 2006, Sveinn Sigurbjarnarson received the prestigious Kletturinn award, recognizing his significant contribution to establishing tourism in East Iceland.
Tanni remains a family-owned company, now in the hands of Sveinn's daughter, Díana Mjöll Sveinsdóttir, and her husband, Sigurbjörn Jónsson. Díana took over as managing director in November 2013, and after Sveinn's passing, she and Sigurbjörn continue to carry forward his legacy, ensuring Tanni remains a cornerstone of East Icelandic tourism.
